Just when it seemed like canon was putting all of its energy into the full-frame eos our series it unveiled a flagship aps-c camera and the m6 mark ii is an important model for Canon for several reasons first off its canons new flagship M series camera replacing both the m5 and m6 models it also has an all-new 32 megapixel sensor with the highest resolution you can find on any aps-c mirrorless camera as a flagship camera it delivers flagship features like very fast shooting speeds face and I detect autofocus and full sensor 4k at 850 dollars the m62 is competitive with its rivals namely the sony a sixty-four hundred Fujifilm xt 30 and Nikon's new Z 50 well the m6 Mark 2 has that headline-grabbing sensor it's controversial for what it doesn't have now let's dive in and find out why all of canons m-series cameras are compact and the m6 mark 2 is no exception it weighs just 408 grams with a battery and memory card I run the same as its rivals there's a big caveat to that spec though unlike all its rivals the m6 - doesn't have a built-in electronic viewfinder to get that feature you need the optional $200 EVF DC - which adds it to the bulk and price of the camera as a reminder the m5 did have an EDF while the original m6 didn't canon might have figured that vloggers don't need it and photographers would be willing to pay an extra 200 dollars to get it either way it's a bad decision in my opinion that issue aside the m6 - is easy to shoot with the buttons are all easy to find and the grip is comfortable for the size of the camera however I do prefer the bigger grip on Nikon z50 there are three dials on top to change the shooting mode focus and aperture you adjust other common settings like exposure compensation and shooting mode from the rear control dial the m62 doesn't have many programmable buttons but it does have a dial function button for the ISO and a variety of other settings with some programming I was able to do most of my shooting with the manual controls and quick menu when you do have to dive into the menus Canon system is better than some of its rivals but not by a lot the rear display isn't fully articulating but it does flip up 180 degrees for vloggers or selfie takers it lets you set a focus point even when you're using the EVF and control both the quick and main menus the m62 doesn't have it built-in EVF but it does have a pop-up flash that can come in handy when you're shooting portraits and need a bit of fill light the flip up screen is better for vloggers than the flip down screen on Nikon z50 that's because you could attach a tripod or stabilizer without blocking the screen however it won't work if you attach a microphone to the hotshoe speaking of the m6 has a microphone input but doesn't have a headphone jack by contrast Fuji films XT 30 has a USB C port that can be used as a headphone output there's only one memory card but at least it's an SD UHS 2 slot Nikon Z 50 by contrast only has a slower uhs-1 slot the smallish LP e 17 battery is good for hundred and five shots but a mere 250 with the EVF attached considering how fast the m62 can shoot you'll need to carry several of those batteries it can hit 14 frame per second bursts in the fastest shooting mode with autofocus and auto exposure enabled that's an incredible speed for such a small camera in reality canons digit 8 image processor isn't quite as quick as what sony has on the a 6400 as a result the AF system occasionally had trouble keeping up with the camera at 14 frames per second if even that isn't fast enough.
Canon has a new raw burst mode that lets you shoot cropped 18 megapixel photos at up to 30 frames per second for 84 frames with continuous autofocus tracking that mode is very effective provided that your subjects move predictably also be aware of the fact that it takes a long time for the buffer to clear both in regular and raw burst modes the m62 uses canons dual pixel AF which is slower than what sony has but more accurate with tracking enabled you just need to select a subject and it will stay locked on you can also select face and eye detection provided your subject is human overall it works well but occasionally misses focus when the processor can't keep up if you keep dragging point of this camera is the high-resolution 32 point 5 megapixels sensor it delivers photos with more detail than any other aps-c mirrorless camera especially if you use the fine detail setting it also has canons excellent color size to deliver accurate colors and lifelike skin tones when shooting JPEGs the 14 bit RAW files as you can imagine are huge in size at up to 50 megapixels each in Lightroom though they give you lots of room to fix your over or under exposure mistakes and tweak colors to your heart's content for such a high resolution camera it also has very decent low-light capability with usable shots up to ISO 12800 for best results it's best to stay below ISO 6400 though there's one unexpected issue with such a high res sensor Canon has just 8 M Series lenses and only a few are sharp enough to handle 32 megapixels this has been an ongoing issue for M mount camera owners but luckily Sigma will soon release three Prime's that should be better you can also use Canada our lenses via an EF adapter but then you're throwing away the advantages of the m6 2's compact size with full sensor 4k a flip up screen and dual pixel autofocus the m62 should make a good vlogging and general-purpose video camera it can do those things but I wouldn't recommend it for a few reasons it simply doesn't deliver sharp a downsampled video like its rivals it also lacks a 24 P video option though Canon has promised to address that in a future firmware update another issue is the lack of a headphone jack so you can't monitor audio while shooting I have mixed feelings about this camera on the one hand it delivers excellent high resolution images even in low-light and you can shoot those at a very high speed and count on canons dual pixel autofocus however Canon has a poor selection of amount lenses and many of them aren't sharp enough for the sensor and it's unacceptable for a flagship camera to be missing a built-in EVF finally the m62 could be a good vlogging camera but the poor 4k video quality doesn't cut it next to rivals for all-around performance you'd be better off getting Fuji films $800 X 230 which i think is a better camera in this price range Sony's a 6400 has slightly better autofocus while the Nikon G 50 is a bit easier to use that said if you need a compact high resolution camera the Canon m6 mark 2 is the best and really the only game in town
